The 2025 Preview release of Microsoft’s Windows Server delivers improved security and performance in a future-ready platform, while providing user-demanded features and functionality.

With hybrid cloud capabilities, reboot-free patching, Hyper-V features, AI-powered experiences, and the next-generation Active Directory, the upcoming 2025 release of Windows Server is ready to become the backbone of It companies, apps and services.

Windows Server 2025 is currently available for deployment via an ISO or a VHD image. Alternatively, you can try it on Azure to test the new features and get a different product experience.

There are two installation modes that you can choose from.

The ‘Standard Evaluation’ delivers a more lightweight package comprising the core components of Windows Server 2025, without a GUI. This can be used for remote deployment via any server management tool (e.g. Windows Admin Center, Powershell).

On the other hand, the 2025 edition also provides a ‘Desktop Experience’, which features a full-featured user-interface that seems to borrow graphic details from Windows 11. To get a better user experience, the Windows Terminal and Winget are installed by default, allowing quick and easy application deployment on Windows Server.

Windows Server 2025 brings to the table key improvements that got the tech community excited, starting with hotpatching, which allows installing security patches without having to restart the server.

Aiming for enhanced scalability and security, the new Active Directory features updated functional levels, a 32K page size and support for TLS 1.3, employing stronger default security standards.

As for storage and performance, the new 2025 Server edition features optimized NVMe storage, greatly improving performance and reducing workloads, with a significant impact on the CPU and resource usage.

With advanced clustering functions and extensive Hyper-V integration, better container support, improved remote work via SMB, as well as networking-related advancements and modern AKS apps, Windows Server 2025 is the portrait of all the newest technologies and tools that Microsoft tested lately.

CPU:
1.4 GHz 64-bit processor, compatible with x64 instruction set
Supports NX and DEP
Supports CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, and PrefetchW
Supports Second Level Address Translation (EPT or NPT)
RAM: 512 MB for Server Core, 2 GB for Server with Desktop Experience
ECC (Error Correcting Code) type or similar technology for physical host deployments
32 GB of space
An Ethernet adapter that can achieve a throughput of at least 1 gigabit per second
Compliant with the PCI Express architecture specification
DVD drive (if you intend to install the operating system from DVD media)
The following items are only required for certain features:
UEFI 2.3.1c-based system and firmware that supports secure boot
Trusted Platform Module (TPM)
Graphics device and monitor capable of Super VGA (1024 x 768) or higher-resolution
Keyboard and Microsoft mouse (or other compatible pointing device)
Internet access (fees may apply)

Limitations in the unregistered version

180 days trial
Evaluation versions of Windows Server must be activated over the internet in the first 10 days to avoid automatic shutdown.
